We are thrilled to announce that one of our schemes, South Cliff Gardens, has won a European Garden Award in this year’s upcoming European Garden Award Ceremony on the 27th June!
There will be one 1st Prize winner, and two winners of a 2nd Prize in three categories, “Management or Development of a Historic Park or Garden”, “Design or Concept of a Contemporary Park or Garden” and “Climate Mitigation Measures in Parks and Gardens”.
The awards are organised by The European Garden Heritage Network EGHN, an institution established in 2003 in North Rhine-Westphalia. EGHN has a wide range of services and expertise, and is appreciated by the professional world as a competent and attractive partner for professional exchange and cooperation, in a variety of projects across Europe.
South Cliff Gardens has been selected in the “Management or Development of a Historic Park or Garden” category, along with Promenades de Reims, Reims (France), and Raby Castle and the Rising, Darlington (United Kingdom), the latter located a stone’s throw away from South Cliff Gardens.
South Cliff Gardens, covering 16-hectares, comprises of a series of seaside walks and gardens, which provide iconic views of Scarborough’s South Bay. Once a place of attractive walkways, stunning floral displays, and exquisite shelters developed by pioneering Victorian and Edwardian designers, the site became degraded through decades of underinvestment and storm exposure, and was placed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register in 2013.
In response, the 'Saving South Cliff Gardens' project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, was developed and delivered by Scarborough Borough Council (now North Yorkshire Council), and Chartered Landscape Architects Southern Green between 2017 and 2024, working in partnership with the Friends of South Cliff Gardens.
Simon Green (Director of Southern Green), who led on this project, will be attending the awards ceremony in Dusseldorf on 27th June, and is giving a short speech on the importance of the Gardens and the success of the restoration project.
