2nd February marks World Wetlands Day, a global event which raises awareness around one of our most diverse and valuable ecosystems. From providing crucial habitats for endangered species, to supporting livelihoods for millions of people worldwide, wetlands play a pivotal role in sustaining life on earth.
Defined simply, wetlands are places where water meets land. They offer countless ecosystem benefits, including filtering pollution and protecting communities from flooding. In the UK they act as crucial habitats for a wide range of wildlife, help to manage flood risk, and also store vast amounts of carbon. Sadly, the UK has lost around 90% of its wetland habitats, meaning restoration and protection of these important ecosystems is crucial.
Several years ago, we were delighted to be involved in the Cassiobury Park wetland restoration project. Southern Green assisted Watford Borough Council to revive the former watercress beds, transforming them into a thriving wildlife sanctuary. The restoration involved creating a resilient mosaic of wetlands, chalkstream habitat, and accessible nature trails, all whilst preserving the integrity of the historic water infrastructure and parkland character.
On this World Wetland Day, it is important to celebrate the wetland habitats which continue to thrive, whilst advocating for their protection and restoration. Looking ahead, we hope to continue contributing to projects that restore and enhance these vital landscapes for both people and nature.
