Southern Green was involved in this complex flagship school development in Gateshead from the early design stages. Originally commissioned to produce a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment for the proposed school development, the commission was subsequently extended to involve the Masterplanning and detailed design of external works at the school site.
The aims of the scheme were to create an exciting and stimulating educational environment, improving the potential use of the landscape as a teaching resource, whilst also providing space for flexible and creative play.
The scope of works included earth sculpting to the front of the site, extensive planting to improve the biodiversity of the site, introduction of a pond and wetland habitat area, creation of a sixth form courtyard and the construction of new playing fields and a multi-use games area. The scheme has won a number of awards including a Civic Trust Award and a RIBA Award.
