Southern Green was commissioned to join a multi-disciplinary team to provide the public realm design input for the Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City project (HYMC). At the heart of the project is the reinvigoration of a number of existing buildings, refurbishment of high-profile public realm spaces, and historic ships linked to Hull’s maritime history.
Queen’s Gardens is a core element of the city centre regeneration, comprising a 4-hectare public green space. The design of the gardens balances the role of the gardens as a living piece of history, dating back to its original function as a dock, and as a contemporary urban green space that meets the needs of contemporary users.
This revitalised Queen’s Gardens celebrates the city’s rich maritime heritage, whilst preserving the historic significance of the gardens and providing accessibility throughout to provide an inclusive and accessible environment. Hundreds of new trees have been planted, rain gardens introduced and a large open space has been created for future events.
